About Gram Niyojan Kendra:

Gram Niyojan Kendra is a national level organization working towards transforming the lives of women and children from disadvantaged and deprived communities. At present, activities towards prevention of trafficking of children and women are being implemented in Bharatpur district in Rajasthan.

An initiative to prevent trafficking through education: Samriddhi Bal Vidya Mandir, Bharatpur Rajasthan

Samriddhi Bal Vidya Mandir was established in 2002 by Gram Niyojan Kendra (GNK) at Roopwas, Bharatpur, Rajasthan. It was set up as an effort to provide quality education to the children of Nat and Bedia communities, who were traditionally engaged in prostitution.

Aress Foundation

Aress Foundation is supporting Samriddhi Bal Vidya Mandir at Roopwas Bharatpur, an initiative of GRAM Niyojan Kendra, aimed at prevention of child trafficking through education. This initiative, which started as a childcare centre, is now a secondary school. The school covers 27 villages surrounding Roopwas tehsil and has children from various communities attending the school. A significant number of families in these villages are engaged in commercial sex work and pimping of women for prostitution.

More than 90% of the students belong to Scheduled Caste and Dalit families. Regular outreach activities are undertaken in the peripheral villages to promote girl’s education and prevent child trafficking. The school, recognized by Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education, has nearly 200 students studying in grades 1st to 10th presently.

The activities supported by Aress Foundation include:

Proper functioning of the school

  • Includes Appointment of Teachers.
  • Timely disbursal of Wages etc.
  • Doubt clearing sessions of students other than school Hours - This helps to ensure that children are studying regularly at home also.

Community level educational support to children in grades 1-8th:

  • To ensure that children receive continuous educational support, community classes under “Aao Padhe Aur Padhaye1” campaign are held after a detailed discussion with the community people in each village.
  • All the teachers visit all the villages to cover the students in all the villages turn by turn. A roster is prepared at the beginning of the month to manage this process. Each teacher teaches the lesson of the book in first visit then they prepare worksheet which is given to the students in second visit and check in third visit. Apart from teaching through Worksheet, Dictation, Sulekh- to practice hand writing at home is also followed by the teachers.

Strengthening children’s groups and youth leaders for social action:

  • Meetings with Children’s Group are organised in 27 villages regularly. The purpose of the meeting is to create awareness about Child trafficking, specially in context of lockdown due to COVID 19, which has led to many families losing their livelihood source. As a consequence of which children are at a risk of being trafficked to support the family livelihood. These children were also made aware about the child-line phone number 1098 in case of any situation such or issues such as missing children from the community etc.

Meeting with Parents/ AWWs and School Teachers:

  • Anganwadi Workers, ASHA and Helpers of Anganwadi Kendras are regularly contacted and meetings organised in the centre, to know the number of children crossed 5 years of age so that the parents of these children can be contacted and motivated for admission in primary school. This year so far, a list of 136 kids; who are eligible for school enrolment; was generated through this activity. Out of 136 children 75 children were mobilised for admission in the government run primary school and 46 children were linked with community class run by Samriddhi Bal Vidya Mandir teachers.

Meeting with parents:

  • Regular meetings with parents are held to ensure that parents continue to send their children for community classes. It is a mandate that both Father and Mother are spoken to during such meetings.
